Lori Hamilton Bio

Lori Hamilton is a 38-year old rape survivor and breast cancer survivor. She has competed in poetry slams and performed at spoken word and open mic poetry readings in Birmingham since 1992 and in Montevallo since 2003. She received a bachelor of arts in Journalism, with a minor in English, from UAB in 1998.

She performed as part of the ensemble cast for Eve Ensler’s “Vagina Monologues” in UAB’s 2001 production, competed in Southern Fried Regionals and Nationals as a member of the Montevallo poetry slam team in 2003 and 2005, read a part of her poem “If I Had Two Breasts” on WBHM’s “Tapestries” program, and featured at the Florence poetry slam in July 2008.

She was a part of the first-ever Spoken Word Festival at Birmingham’s City Stages in 1996, where she was confronted by a police officer for reciting a profanity in one of her poems.

Her first chapbook of poetry, “live, from the emergency room” was published by New Dawn Unlimited in November 2008, chronicling her experiences as a rape survivor.

She is married to Robert Hamilton.
